Kenya's Pharmacy and Poisons Board has approved seven new semaglutide products, expanding the available treatment options for type 2 diabetes and weight management. Previously, patients relied solely on Ozempic and Wegovy, both produced by Novo Nordisk. With the introduction of generic alternatives like Truglyx, which launched in Nairobi last month, the market is shifting. These new approvals bring the total number of semaglutide products registered in the country to nine.

Health officials emphasize that these medications are not interchangeable. Each product holds a specific approval for distinct medical needs. While Ozempic is primarily for managing type 2 diabetes, Wegovy is indicated for weight management in adults with a high body mass index. Dr. Ahmed Mohamed, CEO of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, warns that the public must treat these as prescription-only medications. He stresses that patients should avoid obtaining these drugs from unauthorized sources or using them without a professional medical assessment.

The cost of these treatments varies significantly, with original brand-name drugs ranging from Sh50,000 to Sh75,000 per injection, while generic options cost between Sh13,000 and Sh18,500. Despite this increased availability, medical experts caution against the trend of using semaglutide for unsupervised weight loss. Endocrinologist Dr. Kirtida Acharya notes that unregulated use can lead to serious health complications, including muscle mass loss and severe side effects. She advises that successful treatment requires a clinical plan including resistance exercise and dietary adjustments.

Obesity rates in Kenya have reached a significant threshold, with the number of adults affected more than doubling over the last twelve years. Current data indicates that 3.6 million Kenyan adults live with obesity. Health professionals remain focused on shifting the narrative from reactive treatment to prevention, encouraging lifestyle changes such as improved nutrition and consistent physical activity. Patients are urged to consult only with licensed healthcare providers to ensure their treatment is safe, effective, and tailored to their specific medical profile.
