Environment Canada has issued extreme heat warnings across the country, but experts are reminding citizens that medication and alcohol can alter how the body manages high temperatures. Understanding these interactions is critical for personal safety when the mercury rises.
Several common prescription and over-the-counter drugs affect the body's natural cooling mechanisms. Beta-blockers, for instance, restrict blood flow to the skin and inhibit sweat production, which is a primary method for cooling down. Conversely, medications such as SSRIs and SNRIs, often prescribed for depression, can trigger excessive sweating. This imbalance leads to rapid fluid loss and increases the risk of dehydration. Drugs used to manage high blood pressure, including diuretics and ACE inhibitors, may reduce the sensation of thirst, making individuals less likely to consume the necessary amount of water.
Medication efficacy is also a concern during heat waves. Regulatory agencies note that temperatures exceeding 25 degrees Celsius can degrade the chemical composition of various drugs. Storing pills in hot environments like cars or direct sunlight can render them ineffective or dangerous. Insulin and other refrigerated medications require strict temperature control, as do medical devices like blood glucose monitors, which may provide inaccurate readings when exposed to heat.
Alcohol consumption presents a separate set of risks during hot weather. Because alcohol acts as a diuretic, it signals the kidneys to flush fluids from the body. It also interferes with internal temperature regulation, causing increased perspiration. Experts advise that if you choose to drink, alternating with water or switching to low-alcohol alternatives is necessary to mitigate the risk of severe dehydration. Always store your medication in a cool, dry place and stay hydrated when heat levels spike.
