Patients taking semaglutide for diabetes or weight management reported a 40 percent reduction in asthma attacks, according to a recent study presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress in Barcelona. This large-scale analysis of electronic medical records in the United Kingdom suggests that the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy carries significant potential for lung health. Researchers observed these individuals over a set period and compared their respiratory health outcomes against those taking older diabetes medications such as sulfonylureas.
The findings point toward a broader clinical utility for GLP-1 receptor agonists beyond glucose regulation and mass reduction. Led by Professor Chloe Bloom from Imperial College London, the research team examined the health data of approximately 20,000 patients. They specifically looked for evidence of reduced acute respiratory flare-ups. The data showed that while the class of drugs as a whole performed well, semaglutide stood out as the most effective intervention for asthma patients. The study also noted a 20 percent decrease in COPD flare-ups for those on the same medication.

Scientists previously theorized that GLP-1 receptor agonists might possess anti-inflammatory properties that reach deep into the lung tissue. Chronic airway diseases like asthma are often driven by inflammation that persists despite standard inhaler use. Because obesity is frequently linked to metabolic dysfunction and lung distress, address the underlying weight issue might naturally lower the frequency of attacks. Still, the precise biological pathway remains under study.
Dr. Bohee Lee, who presented the work, noted that past trials for these drugs rarely tracked respiratory health as a primary endpoint. This gap in clinical data makes the real-world evidence from these patient records vital for future investigation. The researchers carefully controlled for comorbidities and previous health history to ensure the results were not skewed by unrelated factors. They analyzed four distinct patient groups to verify the consistency of the results across different demographics.
Clinical Caution and Future Directions
Despite the positive data, medical experts are urging caution. Dr. Alexander Mathioudakis of the University of Manchester highlighted that these results must undergo validation through randomized controlled trials before doctors change prescribing habits. Current guidelines do not list these medications as standard asthma or COPD treatments. The existing data shows an association but does not yet establish a definitive cause-and-effect link that justifies off-label use for respiratory conditions.
