New research published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology reveals a link between body dysmorphic tendencies and how the brain processes information about the self. Researchers at King’s College London found that individuals who report higher levels of body dysmorphic symptoms show an exaggerated self-prioritization effect. This means the brain focuses more intensely on information associated with the self compared to information regarding others.
While most people naturally prioritize self-related data, those with body dysmorphic symptoms demonstrate this pattern even when the information is neutral or disconnected from their physical appearance. In a series of associative learning experiments, participants were asked to link geometric shapes to personal labels. Those with higher symptom scores were consistently faster and more accurate at identifying their own assigned pairings than those associated with strangers or friends.
Lead researcher Maria Richards-Brown notes that this bias points to a fundamental difference in how individuals with these preoccupations view the world. The study tested whether other factors like depression or impulsivity might drive these results but found no significant influence from those conditions. The data suggests that this cognitive bias serves as a key underlying mechanism for the intense focus on perceived flaws.
These findings could eventually inform clinical treatments. By identifying how information processing differs in patients, experts may develop training exercises that help individuals shift their attention away from the self. Future studies will need to confirm these results with clinically diagnosed populations and more diverse groups to better understand the role of this bias in long-term recovery.
Understanding these cognitive patterns provides a pathway toward more specific therapeutic interventions. By moving beyond behavioral symptoms, researchers are now looking at the core brain mechanisms that sustain such persistent and distressing preoccupations.
