Ohio 'House of Horrors' father seeks mental competency evaluation: report
Gary Siders Jr., the man central to the Vinton County neglect case, has formally requested a mental competency evaluation. His attorney, R. Lee Roberts, filed a motion on Friday, seeking to have the court determine if his client is capable of standing trial. Roberts has also asked that related documentation be kept under seal due to sensitive information regarding his client's condition.
This move comes after law enforcement discovered 16 children living in severe conditions at a Vinton County residence on June 30. Authorities described the home as infested with bugs and in a state of extreme squalor. The children, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years, reportedly displayed signs of developmental delays and immediate medical needs at the time of their rescue.
Gary Siders Jr. currently faces 16 felony counts of child endangerment and four misdemeanor public indecency charges. He has entered a plea of not guilty and continues to be held on a $300,000 bond. The court has postponed the hearing for the misdemeanor charges until August 13.
Following the discovery, Ohio officials pledged emergency funds to assist with the ongoing recovery and placement of the 16 children. They remain in state custody as they receive the necessary medical and psychological support. The case remains a focal point for investigators who characterized the environment at the home as profoundly harmful to the children involved.
