The Lansing community is gaining new mental health resources. U-M Health-Sparrow officially broke ground on the $83 million Janice M. Granger Behavioral Health Building on Wednesday. Located near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Jerome Street behind the main hospital, this project is a significant step toward improving regional care access.
The facility will include 64 beds and is scheduled to open in 2028. Designers focused on a healing environment, incorporating light-filled spaces along with indoor and outdoor gardens to support patient well-being. Regional President of U-M Health Margaret Dimond noted that the project is a vital advancement for vulnerable patients in the area.
Funding for this development stems from the largest donation in the organization's history, provided by Janice and Alton L. Granger. This mental health facility joins other recent infrastructure investments in the city. Last month, crews also broke ground on a $60 million surgery center nearby, which aims to decrease hospital wait times and expand capacity for local patients.
These ongoing investments reflect a broader push by health systems in mid-Michigan to address long-standing service gaps. By separating specialized behavioral care from general surgical services, the organization expects to provide more focused support for the community. Residents can anticipate these new services to be operational within the next few years.
