Spartanburg groups launch effort aimed at improving mental health, curbing suicides and opioid use

Spartanburg organizations are launching a new initiative to address critical gaps in behavioral healthcare. Known as Vital Spartanburg, this project focuses on improving mental health outcomes, lowering suicide rates, and addressing opioid use throughout the region. The program moves beyond the planning phase, entering an active stage that will continue through 2029.

The effort is led by the Spartanburg Regional Foundation, which provided $3 million in funding. The Mary Black Foundation also contributed $6 million over five years, stemming from a 2022 gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. By connecting local governments, healthcare providers, and funders, the initiative aims to replace disconnected services with a coordinated network of care.

Local data highlights the urgency of this work. Emergency departments in the area treat over 5,000 patients annually for conditions that could have been managed with better access to earlier intervention. Additionally, the region continues to experience high rates of opioid overdoses and residents struggling with severe mental illness. This initiative intends to meet these challenges by expanding the local workforce and improving referral systems among partners.

Strategic goals center on youth, families, and residents currently living with substance use disorders or severe mental health conditions. Leaders behind the project emphasize that this is a community-wide issue affecting schools and workplaces. By establishing pilot programs and awareness campaigns, the participants hope to keep residents out of emergency rooms and connected to consistent support.
