New Findings on Strength Training and Anxiety
Weightlifting serves as an effective tool for reducing depressive symptoms in young women struggling with anxiety. A study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders shows that both high and low intensity resistance training yield significant mental health improvements. The research team focused on young women because this demographic often faces higher rates of anxiety and depression while remaining less likely to engage in regular muscle-strengthening activities.
Lead researcher Darragh O’Sullivan from the University of Limerick spearheaded the project. He noted that women frequently face higher risks of generalized anxiety disorder and major depression. Because current clinical treatments like medication or psychotherapy can be expensive or cause side effects, identifying accessible alternatives remains a priority for public health experts.
The Design of the Study
Scientists recruited 55 young women with an average age of 22 who met the criteria for subclinical generalized anxiety. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups for an eight-week program consisting of twice-weekly, supervised workouts. These sessions included standard movements such as squats, bench presses, and deadlifts.
One group performed these exercises at 70 to 80 percent of their maximum capacity to ensure high intensity. The second group performed the same movements at only 20 percent of their maximum capacity. This low-intensity group acted as a control, helping researchers determine if the psychological benefits stemmed from the exercise itself or merely from the act of attending sessions and interacting with a trainer.
Results and Implications for Mental Health
Both groups saw substantial drops in depressive symptoms. The high-intensity group experienced an average symptom reduction of 54 percent. The low-intensity group saw a 43 percent drop. Researchers found no statistically significant difference in the mental health outcomes between the two groups.
Physical strength gains differed as expected. The high-intensity participants increased their strength by 41 percent, while the low-intensity group saw a 21 percent increase. The mental health benefits persisted even one month after the training sessions concluded, suggesting that the positive effects on mood were not temporary.
Limitations and Future Research
The study had specific constraints. Because the low-intensity group still gained some physical strength, researchers could not fully isolate the psychological impact from the mild physical training effect. The reliance on self-reported questionnaires also means results could be subject to participant bias.
Future investigations will likely aim to compare weightlifting directly against standard clinical treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy. While these findings apply specifically to young adult women with analogue anxiety, the results suggest that any increase in movement can be beneficial. Starting with low-intensity sessions remains a practical entry point for those currently inactive. Engaging in consistent, even low-effort, physical training provides a clear path for symptom relief.
