Data from Copernicus, the Earth observation unit of the EU space program, confirms that average global temperatures reached 1.65 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. This milestone matches only one other month in recorded history, July 2023. Scientists note that the heat stems from the continued burning of fossil fuels, which remains the primary driver of global heating.
Rising sea surface temperatures also play a significant role. When combined with the El Niño climate pattern, the atmospheric shift creates conditions that push seasonal averages into uncharted territory. Samantha Burgess, who leads climate strategy at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, stated that these observations show how climate change drives extremes across both the atmosphere and the oceans. Western Europe specifically faced its hottest summer on record, leading to widespread droughts and fires.
The Role of Global Emissions
The heat spike arrives as greenhouse gas emissions hit a new high. Human activity produced 54 billion tons of CO2 equivalent last year, an increase of 0.7 percent. This trajectory puts the world on a path to lock in 1.5 degrees of warming before the end of this decade. While some regions show slight progress, the global aggregate continues to move in the wrong direction.
National trends remain varied. The United States reported a 2.2 percent increase in climate pollution during 2025. Conversely, emissions in China grew by only 0.1 percent, while India saw a drop of 0.2 percent. The European Union also recorded a 0.2 percent decline in total emissions. Still, the global total remains high enough to sustain the upward trend in average temperatures.
Data Analysis and Future Risks
Copernicus combines air and sea temperature readings to track these climate shifts. Global surface air temperatures reached 16.96C in August, which sits 0.85C above the 30-year average calculated between 1990 and 2020. Sea surface temperatures reached an average of 21.07C. These numbers confirm that the warming is not limited to land-based measurements.
Europe saw August temperatures 1.1C above the long-term average. This made the period the fourth-hottest August on record for the continent. The situation for 2026 looks grim when viewed as a full seasonal cycle, as it ranks as the third-hottest summer overall for Europe. What happens next depends on whether nations can reverse the emissions trend. Experts warn that the current pace of change leaves very little room for error if the goal is to stabilize the climate at safe levels.
