‘A five-alarm fire’: Western reservoirs that supply California fall to record low levels

Lake Mead and Lake Powell have reached their lowest combined water levels on record. This new decline signals a significant crisis for the seven states that rely on the Colorado River for water and electricity. Researchers describe the current state of these major reservoirs as a five-alarm fire that requires immediate attention.

The Colorado River currently supports roughly 35 million people and five million acres of farmland. However, the watershed is struggling as years of over-allocation and severe drought conditions take their toll. Since 2020, the river's flow has dropped by 32 percent compared to the previous century. The lack of snowpack in the Rocky Mountains during the most recent season has accelerated the decline of these storage systems.

Federal officials and state leaders are currently at an impasse regarding long-term solutions. While some downstream states have proposed voluntary cuts to their water usage, the administration is pushing for mandatory reductions that could reach 40 percent of current allotments for California, Arizona, and Nevada. These cuts would represent a major shift in how the region manages its water supply for cities and agriculture.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum is expected to release a new plan for the basin next week to address these shortages. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Reclamation is providing additional funding to incentivize water conservation among farmers and ranchers in the upper basin. Despite these efforts, experts warn that the region must prepare for a future with significantly less water if current trends continue.
