Colorado drought increasingly linked to long-term climate change
A study from the Colorado School of Mines shows that the severe snow drought observed in the Upper Colorado River Basin this past year is 14 times more likely to occur due to long-term climate change. Researchers compared current conditions to data from the pre-industrial era to determine how atmospheric warming influences water scarcity in the West.
The findings indicate that warmer temperatures rob significantly more moisture from the snowpack than in the past. This loss represents a volume of water equal to Lake Mead. While historical low-snow years occurred naturally, the frequency of these events is expected to climb steadily under current global emission projections. Modeling suggests that by the 2050s, this level of drought will happen in three out of every 10 years, reaching nearly nine out of 10 years by the 2090s.
Adrienne Marshall, a co-author of the study, notes that these results highlight the necessity of both immediate adaptation and long-term emission reductions. Denver Water has already begun warning customers about the need for conservation, as current savings are not meeting targets. Experts suggest that societal shifts, such as large-scale lawn replacement and water-conscious landscaping, are becoming necessary to manage the reality of limited water supplies.
The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, represents a shift in how scientists connect short-term weather events to broad climate trends. This attribution field provides a clearer understanding of how specific disasters are tied to decades of warming. By identifying these links, researchers aim to provide a foundation for policy decisions aimed at managing water resources across the Western United States.
