A study from the Colorado School of Mines shows that the severe snow drought observed in the Upper Colorado River Basin this past year is 14 times more likely to occur due to long-term climate change. Researchers compared current conditions to data from the pre-industrial era to determine how atmospheric warming influences water scarcity in the West.

The findings indicate that warmer temperatures rob significantly more moisture from the snowpack than in the past. This loss represents a volume of water equal to Lake Mead.
