The Eureka City Council has officially approved an increase in garbage and recycling collection fees. After a previous attempt failed due to a lack of a quorum, the council revisited the issue on August 4. The monthly rate for a 32-gallon trash bin will rise by $3.61, reaching a total of $45.94.
Environmental Project Manager Robin Praszker stated the increase is necessary to recover collection service costs, citing the 200-mile distance to the landfill and rising fuel expenses. The decision followed intense debate among councilmembers regarding the frequency and impact of these fee adjustments on local residents.
Councilmember Rene Contreras-DeLoach opposed the measure, expressing frustration with what she characterized as a cycle of rising rates and a lack of action to mitigate costs for citizens. This critique triggered a sharp response from Councilmember Leslie Castellano and Mayor Kim Bergel, who took personal offense at the suggestion that the council is not actively working to support the community.
The final vote resulted in a tie, which Mayor Kim Bergel broke to approve the hike. No members of the public provided input during the hearing, leaving the council to finalize the decision amidst internal friction over budget priorities and the long-term sustainability of local waste management contracts.
