Extreme summer heat across Europe has pushed river water levels to historic lows, creating an urgent ecological crisis that threatens local food supplies and economies. Countries throughout the region face a growing risk of desertification as rainfall remains scarce and temperatures climb past 30 degrees Celsius. In northern Serbia, side channels of the Danube River have receded into small, disconnected ponds. Local fishermen, such as Dusan Jovanovic, report that these remaining pockets of water now trap juvenile fish in temperatures that threaten their survival.
The Economic and Ecological Impact on Fish Farms
The damage extends well beyond recreational fishing. Commercial fish farms in countries including Hungary, Bosnia, Romania, and the Czech Republic face losses totaling millions of dollars. Hungary reported that nearly 280 metric tons of fish perished across 20 farms recently, after 1,588 hectares of ponds dried up entirely. The Hungarian Agriculture and Food Economy Ministry noted that approximately 99 percent of the country currently exists under severe or extreme drought conditions. Producers warn that replacing these fish stocks will take years of investment and recovery.
Romanian fish farmers face a unique challenge because the carp production cycle spans three to four years. Catalin Platon, president of the ROMFISH National Association of Fish Producers, stated that the industry is still reeling from losses incurred during severe droughts in 2023 and 2024. Previous water-use policies frequently prioritized agricultural irrigation at the expense of aquaculture, leaving ponds empty during the hottest months. In the Czech Republic, fishery operators have started aerating ponds and suspending feeding to conserve oxygen, while preparing for the difficult task of managing larger reservoirs as water levels continue to drop.
Emergency Response and Long-Term Vulnerability
Emergency measures are currently underway in several nations. In Slovenia, fire crews pumped 8 million liters of water into Lake Pristava in a desperate attempt to stop fish suffocation caused by heat-induced oxygen depletion. Bosnian trout breeders, who rely on cold, oxygen-rich mountain water, are now forced to add liquid oxygen to their tanks just to survive the summer season. These temporary fixes illustrate the growing disparity between current climate conditions and existing infrastructure.
Scientific data consistently links these patterns of intense heat and prolonged drought to human-induced climate change. Experts suggest that regional desertification is a legitimate threat to the Great Hungarian Plain and surrounding agricultural zones. The current crisis has exposed a lack of preparation among businesses and governments alike. Leaders are now evaluating how to retain water more effectively within the landscape to buffer against future extreme weather cycles. Whether these adjustments will arrive in time to protect vulnerable ecosystems remains the primary concern for the coming years.
