Human skeletal remains were discovered at Lake Mead on Sunday. Visitors at Boulder Beach found the items while walking along the shoreline. National Park Service rangers and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene to secure the area and handle the recovery. This discovery comes as the region faces severe drought conditions that have pushed water levels to historic lows.
Water levels at the reservoir dropped to 1,039.77 feet above sea level this week. This measurement marks a new record low for the largest reservoir in the United States. Experts note that as the water recedes, items and remains that have been submerged for decades are now appearing along the shoreline.
This is not the first time such findings have occurred at the lake. During the summer of 2022, several sets of remains were discovered as the water level plummeted. One case involved a man found in a barrel who was later determined to be a victim of a homicide dating back to the 1980s. Other cases involved long-term drowning victims whose bodies were recovered after years underwater.
Authorities have not released details regarding the identity of the remains found this past weekend. The investigation remains active at this time. Park officials continue to monitor the shoreline as the environmental impact of the drought persists.
