Hurricane Lala recently moved past Hawaii, causing significant disruption across the islands. Although the storm did not make an official landfall, it passed close enough to the Big Island to deliver record rainfall, destructive wind gusts, and damaging waves. This event ranks as one of the most impactful weather systems for the region in over 150 years.

Technically, Lala traveled along a track influenced by both high-pressure systems and the local topography of the Hawaiian islands. The southern portion of the Big Island faced the brunt of the storm as it sat within the dangerous front quadrant. Rainfall totals reached extreme levels in a short period. Laupahoehoe recorded over 43 inches of rain during the event, with much of that falling within a single 24-hour window. This led to flash flood emergencies, road closures in Hilo, and reports of homes being swept away in the Naalehu District.

Infrastructure across the state experienced notable strain. High winds downed hundreds of trees and damaged power lines throughout the Big Island. On the high-altitude summit of Maunakea, wind speeds reached 140 mph, accompanied by freezing temperatures. Rainfall also extended beyond the Big Island, impacting lower elevations across the island chain and causing record stream flows in Honolulu County.

Meteorologists indicate that the severity of the storm was tied to elevated water temperatures in the Pacific, which measured 3 degrees warmer than average. These conditions, paired with an active El Niño cycle and climate trends, provided the fuel for the system. While Hawaii has seen other hurricanes pass through the region, the sheer volume of rainfall and the specific path of this storm highlight the ongoing risk profile for the islands during hurricane season.
