The world's oceans reached record-high temperatures in July. According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, the average sea surface temperature reached 20.96C, surpassing the previous record of 20.89C set in 2023. These measurements focus on the area between 60 degrees north and 60 degrees south, excluding polar regions. This warming trend is influenced by the combination of human-driven climate change and the arrival of El Niño conditions in the Pacific.

Rising ocean temperatures carry significant consequences for the global climate. Oceans act as a primary regulator by absorbing excess heat and producing oxygen. When seawater warms, it undergoes thermal expansion, which contributes to one-third of the total sea level rise currently observed. This puts low-lying coastal areas and island nations at direct risk of flooding and erosion as water levels increase.

Beyond sea level rise, warmer water temperatures fuel more intense marine heatwaves. These events harm aquatic ecosystems, leading to mass coral bleaching and the loss of critical kelp forests. Furthermore, warmer ocean surfaces release more moisture and heat into the atmosphere, which leads to stronger, wetter tropical storms. These changes demonstrate how the ocean functions as a critical indicator of broader shifts in atmospheric conditions.

Western Europe also experienced record heat throughout June and July. High-pressure systems trapped heat over the region, while dry soil conditions limited natural cooling. These factors reinforced drought conditions across countries like France, Spain, and the UK. Low water levels in major rivers like the Seine and the Danube have disrupted transport, irrigation, and energy production. Experts indicate that these extreme weather patterns are moving away from historical norms and becoming consistent features of the current climate.
