Southern California faces potential flood risks this Labor Day weekend as weather officials monitor Tropical Storm Marie. The storm is currently developing in the eastern Pacific Ocean south of the Baja California peninsula. While the National Weather Service in San Diego maintains that high uncertainty exists regarding the storm's exact path, the potential for moisture intrusion remains a focal point for forecasters.

Tropical Storm Marie is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by Wednesday. Most models show the system moving west, away from the coast. However, climate scientist Daniel Swain notes there is a real possibility the system turns north toward the region. Even if the system loses its tropical characteristics before reaching land, it could still deposit significant rain or trigger dangerous coastal conditions.

Potential Impacts and Coastal Risks

Forecasters highlight that coastal flooding represents the most immediate concern for the holiday weekend. Swells are expected to arrive Saturday and Sunday, coinciding with some of the highest tides of the month. Meteorologist Kristan Lund of the National Weather Service office in Oxnard warned that south-facing shores are especially vulnerable to this combination of high surf and above-normal tides.

Rain remains a secondary but serious threat. A decaying storm system could bring heavy showers and thunderstorms to the area. If this moisture hits the mountains, the risk of flash floods and debris flows increases. Experts distinguish this threat from high-wind events, noting that the wind intensity likely won't exceed what is common during standard winter storms.

California rarely sees direct hits from tropical storms. The 1939 storm known as the Lash of St. Francis serves as a stark historical example, dumping over 5 inches of rain on Los Angeles and resulting in dozens of deaths. More recently, the remnants of Hurricane Hilary in 2023 caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage across the region and Mexico, despite not making landfall as a hurricane.

Scientists emphasize that the ocean temperatures off Southern California generally remain too cool to sustain hurricane-force winds. The water must typically stay above 80 degrees to support such systems. While current temperatures are warmer than average due to a marine heat wave, they still hover in the high 60s or low 70s.

Future projections suggest the risk from tropical cyclone rainfall will grow. A June 2026 report in Nature Climate Change indicates that extreme rainfall events are becoming more probable due to a warming climate. Combined with population growth in sensitive areas, the exposure to landslides and flood-related damage is expected to rise through 2050.
