Turkmenistan Begins Addressing Major Methane Leaks

Turkmenistan has begun plugging massive methane leaks originating from its aging oil and gas infrastructure, according to new United Nations data. This development marks a shift for a nation previously identified as one of the worst global contributors to methane emissions. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that traps approximately 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide. Because it remains in the atmosphere for a shorter duration than carbon dioxide, immediate efforts to cap these leaks are viewed by climate experts as an essential emergency measure to slow global temperature increases.

The country was identified in 2023 as a primary source of "super-emitter" leaks. These events occur when thousands of tons of methane escape from individual valves or pipelines every hour. The heat generated by a single one of these leaks often exceeds the impact of emissions from millions of SUVs or an entire coal-fired power station. Following intense scrutiny, the Turkmen government began engaging with international partners and the United Nations to address the problem. This marks a departure from the country's earlier position of ignoring the emissions from its vast gas fields.

The Role of Satellite Monitoring in Mitigation

The United Nations Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) has been instrumental in this progress. Over the past year, the system sent 192 alerts to Turkmenistan regarding plumes detected from orbit. To date, the country has repaired eight leaks, including the fixing of corroded pipes and faulty wells. Meghan Demeter, programme manager at MARS, described the progress as a proof point for the efficacy of satellite-based monitoring. She stated that while eight repairs represent an incredible first step, the overall magnitude of the country’s emissions remains high.

Technological monitoring relies on artificial intelligence to synthesize data from more than a dozen satellites. Once a potential leak is identified, it undergoes two layers of human analysis before authorities are notified. The system records a success only after MARS monitors the site and confirms the emissions have ceased. This data-driven approach has now led to the sealing of 43 leaks globally across various nations. One notable success included a massive leak in Algeria that had persisted for nearly 40 years before it was identified and addressed.

Global Response and Future Industry Challenges

International responses to these alerts vary significantly. While Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan have shown steady progress in addressing alerts, other nations remain less active. The United States, which received 138 alerts in the last year, has responded to none, reflecting a change in policy during the second administration of Donald Trump. Countries such as Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina maintain a 100% response rate to alerts sent by the UN, although fixing the leaks often requires substantial planning and funding beyond the initial detection.

The broader industry challenge involves aging infrastructure across former Soviet republics and other gas-producing nations. Dan Grossman of the Environmental Defense Fund noted that stopping methane emissions from existing oil and gas operations is currently the most cost-effective path to reducing climate pollution. As MARS continues to scale its technical support and knowledge-building efforts, the pressure on governments to act remains a primary focus for international climate policy. Future success will depend on whether this initial trend of repair work in Turkmenistan and neighboring regions expands to address the remaining hundreds of known super-emitter sites.
