Fight Over Historic Wacker House Goes Public As Preservationists Call For City Action
The Wacker House in the Old Town Triangle Historic District faces an uncertain future as community leaders call for city intervention. Local residents and the Old Town Triangle Association report that the structure has undergone unauthorized exterior modifications for years. These changes include the removal of siding, the addition of decorative tree trunks to the staircases and the stripping of lead-based paint. Preservationists argue that these actions violate the city’s landmark ordinance, which requires specific oversight for renovations within historic districts.
City records show that the Department of Buildings has issued two stop-work orders at 1838 N. Lincoln Park West since 2023. Officials confirm they have received 13 complaints regarding unpermitted construction, site safety and damage to the landmark status of the building. Despite these notices, the owner has not provided inspectors with access to the interior of the home.
The owner, Michael Gancarz, remains absent from public discourse regarding the property. County records indicate the building is currently facing foreclosure. Meanwhile, the Old Town Triangle Association continues to press the city for stricter enforcement to protect the historic character of the district from further degradation.
