Data collected over decades confirms that giant baleen whales are moving into the waters off East Greenland. These massive marine mammals, including humpback, minke, and fin whales, previously could not access these coastal areas because of persistent sea ice. As global temperatures rise and that ice melts, these whales have arrived in significant numbers to feed during the summer months.
Researchers from the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources conducted systematic surveys using satellite tracking, aerial observations, and input from local hunters. The results indicate a stark change in the region. In 2006, surveys recorded zero humpback whales in the area. By 2024, that number shifted to 150 ship-based sightings. Estimates for the 2024 summer season suggest 16,000 whales visited these waters, consuming hundreds of thousands of tonnes of fish and krill.
Scientists describe this development as a major ecological regime shift. The warming ocean temperatures have created new feeding grounds that attract these opportunistic species. While some marine life benefits from the open water, the study warns that Arctic-specific species face distinct challenges. Narwhals and belugas are losing their traditional habitat as these larger whales expand their territory into previously frozen zones.
This research highlights how warming environments cause immediate shifts in animal behavior and distribution. The movement of these baleen whales into East Greenland represents a significant adjustment in the subarctic marine landscape, with unknown long-term consequences for local ecosystems and established hunting practices.
