By using public genealogical databases, investigators can track down distant relatives whose shared DNA profile leads back to the missing person. Future Implications for the Identification Project
Dr. Jennifer Odien, a forensic anthropologist working with the medical examiner’s office, believes this is only the beginning. Her team has identified 47 specific DNA profiles that are candidates for this same genealogy approach. While she cautioned that not every remaining sample will be viable—due to the degradation of DNA caused by heat, jet fuel, and the passage of time—the success of this one identification provides a new strategy for the remaining 40 percent of victims.
