Baylor Genetics has confirmed a cybersecurity incident affecting more than 248,000 Texans. An unauthorized third party accessed the company network between June 11 and June 17, exposing sensitive personal information stored within their systems.
The compromised data includes lab results, health insurance details, and financial information. In certain cases, social security numbers were also caught in the breach. The company discovered the issue in June and initiated an investigation with the help of digital forensic specialists. Laboratory operations remain functional, and the company reports no interruption to their genetic testing services.
While Baylor Genetics stated they have no current evidence of the stolen data being used for identity theft or fraud, they have notified all affected patients and employees. The incident was also reported to the Texas Attorney General's Office as required by state law. Additional security measures are now in place to protect their environment.
Baylor Genetics maintains its affiliation with the Baylor College of Medicine and operates out of the Texas Medical Center. The organization specializes in genomics and rare disease identification. Patients with concerns are encouraged to watch for updates or communications from the company regarding their specific data status.
