A study from the Yale Center for the Science of Cannabis and Cannabinoids separates the biological drivers of cannabis use from those of cannabis use disorder. Researchers analyzed genomic data and brain imaging to determine why most people who use cannabis do not develop a dependency, while about ten percent of users progress to a clinical disorder.

The findings show that these two states involve different brain networks. Casual cannabis use is linked to the default mode network, which manages self-referential thought. In contrast, cannabis use disorder involves the connection between the default mode network and the salience network, as well as changes to white matter tracts. These white matter tracts function as the brain's long-range communication cables.

Renato Polimanti, the lead author, notes that the transition to addiction is not just a higher quantity of use. It represents a different neurobiological path entirely. This distinction matters for clinical screening and the development of future treatments. By understanding that addiction is a separate neurobiological condition, the medical community can better design interventions for those at risk.

As global access to cannabis increases, these findings provide a clearer framework for understanding harm. The research team emphasizes that treating use and disorder as the same phenomenon ignores the specific mechanisms required for effective clinical care.
