New center launches for personalized genetic therapies

A team of prominent scientists has launched the Center for Therapeutic Genetics to develop personalized treatments for rare genetic diseases. This nonprofit organization marks a shift in how medical researchers approach rare conditions in infants. Rather than treating thousands of diseases in isolation, the founders aim to create a standardized procedural framework for genetic correction. This emerging field is known as interventional genetics.

The project stems from collaboration between leaders at the Broad Institute, Boston Children’s Hospital, and The Jackson Laboratory. The team includes Winston Yan, David Liu, Timothy Yu, and Cat Lutz. These individuals have experience in base editing, prime editing, and the development of custom antisense oligonucleotides. Their initial focus is the creation of custom gene therapies for severe childhood epilepsies, supported by funding from ARPA-H.

The Center for Therapeutic Genetics operates with a lean structure. It functions like a virtual biotech, focusing on data collection and communication with regulators. The goal is to establish a sustainable model where these bespoke therapies gain insurance reimbursement. This economic sustainability is just as critical to the team as securing formal regulatory approval.

This initiative follows the successful custom CRISPR treatment for a patient known as Baby KJ. It joins a growing movement of research centers dedicated to bespoke genetic medicine. By reclassifying diseases based on the underlying genetic mutation rather than the specific condition name, these researchers hope to address the needs of patients who currently lack treatment options. The team remains committed to the clinical safety and efficacy of these interventions as they build out their laboratory and data infrastructure.
