The trial of Lindsay Clancy in Plymouth Superior Court has brought the role of genetic testing in mental health to the forefront. During proceedings, legal teams questioned why DNA analysis was not used to predict the risk of postpartum psychosis for the defendant.

Medical experts testifying in the case noted that while genetic science has advanced, it does not currently offer a predictive tool for this specific condition. Clinicians explained that although researchers are investigating blood-based biomarkers and the synthesis of neurosteroids, these methods are not ready for standard clinical practice.

Postpartum psychosis affects one to two in every 1,000 women. Studies suggest that genetics accounts for roughly half of an individual's susceptibility, but researchers have yet to identify enough specific genetic markers to reliably forecast who will experience this condition after childbirth. Efforts like the Postpartum Psychosis Project at Massachusetts General Hospital continue to collect data to close these gaps in medical understanding.

While some genetic tests exist for medication response, such as GeneSight, they carry mixed evidence regarding their ability to help psychiatrists choose effective treatments. Currently, clinicians still rely on patient reporting and clinical observation to manage postpartum psychiatric care rather than objective DNA diagnostic tests.
