The Impact of Declining Salmon Stocks

These declines have triggered public outrage against industrial trawling operations. Some groups demand a total ban on the bycatch of these fish. Researchers identify climate change as a primary driver for the population collapse. Still, the impact of commercial pollock trawlers remains a focus for regulators. The lab processes samples from five regional canneries. They dry the fin clippings, which allows them to store the samples at room temperature. Data Driven Management

Last year, the lab collected more than 9,000 samples. The team successfully analyzed nearly three-quarters of that haul. They send the raw genetic data to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration lab for final review. This process determines the stock composition of the salmon. The results show that typically less than 20 percent of the chum bycatch originates from Western Alaska stocks. The rest come from Asia, the Pacific Northwest, and the Gulf of Alaska.

The North Pacific Fishery Management Council uses these reports to shape policy. They manage fisheries in federal waters off the coast. Based on the data provided by the lab, the council established a new bycatch limit earlier this year. This policy intends to protect the subsistence interests of residents in Western Alaska. The facility provides a science-based tool for all stakeholders in the region.
