Kindred Companion Sciences recently announced a shift in how we approach pet allergies. The company successfully bred two beagles, Bailey and Alfie, using CRISPR gene editing to eliminate the production of the Can f 1 protein. This specific protein is the primary allergen found in canine dander and saliva that causes reactions for millions of people.
While many breeds are marketed as hypoallergenic, research from the National Institutes of Health indicates that no existing dog breed is truly free of these allergens. Most current allergy management relies on treating human immune responses rather than addressing the source of the allergen. This new approach targets the oil-producing sebaceous glands and the outer layer of tongue cells to stop the protein from forming in the first place.
Veterinary checkups indicate that both dogs are developing normally. While the FDA has not yet provided approval for these specific gene-editing tools, the company maintains that its research follows all federal standards for animal care and use. This work follows other recent genetic engineering projects, such as the efforts by Colossal Biosciences to recreate extinct species through DNA extraction and editing.
Approximately 10 to 20 percent of the global population deals with dog or cat allergies. If this technology gains regulatory clearance, it could change how people with severe reactions interact with pets. The focus remains on biological changes rather than just managing symptoms after contact with an animal.
