Researchers at Kindred Companion Sciences have successfully edited the DNA of two beagles to remove the protein Can f 1, a primary cause of human allergic reactions to dogs. The dogs, named Alfie and Bailey, were born in September 2024. Their existence marks a potential shift for the roughly one in eight Americans who suffer from pet-related allergies.

The Science Behind the Edit

The project stems from the personal experience of Matt Walker, a geneticist and the CEO of Kindred Companion Sciences. Walker has struggled with dog allergies his entire life. His company turned to CRISPR, a gene-editing technology, to target the specific gene sequence responsible for producing the Can f 1 protein. This protein is typically found in dog dander and saliva.

To create Alfie and Bailey, the team edited skin cells from a beagle and cloned them. The modified DNA was then inserted into egg cells, resulting in 25 embryos. These were implanted into a surrogate beagle. Tests on the resulting dogs showed no traces of the Can f 1 allergen in their system. Walker even underwent skin-prick testing using dander and saliva extracts from the puppies and reported no adverse reactions.

Ethical Questions and Industry Impact

Not everyone views this as a purely positive development. Bioethicists like Arthur Caplan have raised concerns about the broader impact of modifying animals for human convenience. One significant worry is that creating engineered pets might reduce the public interest in adopting strays or shelter animals that are not hypoallergenic. The practice of modifying animal traits is not new, but using modern gene-editing tools adds a new layer to the conversation.

Others note that these techniques are not vastly different from traditional breeding programs designed to produce specific traits in dogs. Alison Van Eenennaam, an expert in animal genetics at the University of California, Davis, stated that the source of the ethical dilemma lies in the purpose of producing companion animals, rather than the use of specific gene-editing technology. The debate continues as the industry considers the implications of intentional genetic modification for domestic ownership.

Looking Ahead

Alfie and Bailey are currently the only dogs of their kind. They are not available for public purchase. The Food and Drug Administration has not approved these genetic alterations for commercial pets. Furthermore, this method does not guarantee a total lack of allergic response, as other proteins like Can f 2 can also trigger symptoms in sensitive people.

Kindred Companion Sciences intends to develop founder animals capable of passing the hypoallergenic trait to future litters. The team continues to monitor Alfie and Bailey for any long-term health effects resulting from the procedure. Until safety data accumulates and regulatory hurdles are cleared, these dogs remain limited to research settings. The future of pet ownership for allergy sufferers remains a distant prospect for most.
