Scientists discover why poor sleep may harm some brains more
New research from Edith Cowan University identifies a potential link between specific genetic variants and how poor sleep impacts the brain. Scientists studied the AQP4 gene, which regulates the brain's waste-clearing system during sleep, to understand its role in Alzheimer's disease progression.
The study examined 13 common variations of the AQP4 gene. Participants with certain genetic markers showed faster grey matter loss when they experienced shorter sleep durations. Other variants were linked to structural changes in the brain when individuals took longer to fall asleep. These findings suggest that individual genetic profiles dictate how much sleep disturbances affect long-term brain health.
Grey matter volume is vital for memory, decision-making, and physical movement. Because sleep is a modifiable lifestyle factor, this discovery suggests that clinicians could move toward more personalized prevention strategies. Rather than applying a single standard for sleep health, medical professionals might one day tailor interventions based on a patient's genetic vulnerability.
While the results are significant, the team stresses that these findings require further testing in larger groups. They do not currently recommend widespread genetic testing for this purpose. Instead, the research clarifies why different people experience varying rates of cognitive decline despite similar risk profiles on paper.
