FoxP1 syndrome is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental condition stemming from a mutation of the FoxP1 gene. Sheila Scallan, his mother, first noticed developmental delays in Brendan during his early childhood. When the diagnosis arrived, the family faced a vacuum of information. Geneticists were unsure how the disorder would affect his future. Nico Scallan, his father, had hoped to share a love of off-road riding with his son but felt those expectations vanish when doctors suggested Brendan might never ride anything more complex than a video game simulation.
Building a Platform Through Racing
Racing changed the trajectory of the family's approach to the disorder. When Nico Scallan placed his son on a Honda adult bike and engaged the gear, Brendan immediately showed natural aptitude. The child who was told he would not ride now crosses finish lines and places in regional tournaments. Brendan himself keeps a clear goal in mind. He wants to race in the arena and perform donuts on his bike.
To turn this activity into a wider movement, the family founded Scallan Wolfpack Racing. The branding allows them to use every event as a megaphone for a condition that remains unfamiliar to most of the public. Sheila Scallan describes the racing community as a home for Brendan. They intend to keep the FoxP1 name visible at tracks across the region to ensure their son's presence generates questions about the underlying cause of his condition.
The Drive for Medical Research
Advancing medical understanding of the condition remains the primary focus. While no cure exists today, researchers at UCLA are looking into the viability of gene therapy. The FoxP1 Medical Research Foundation is laying the groundwork for this effort, though project timelines span several years. The Scallans are currently attempting to mobilize 50 families to raise funds to accelerate this laboratory work.
Each family is asked to raise $6,000. This influx of capital could allow for the immediate start of lab testing, bypassing standard delays in funding cycles. For the Scallan family, the effort represents a chance to impact the long-term outlook for others living with the same genetic mutation. They view the track as their primary vehicle for advocacy.
