A Life Dedicated to Medical Genetics

Reed E. Pyeritz, a pioneering medical geneticist and professor emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania, died on August 10 at the age of 78. He passed away at Bryn Mawr Hospital from complications of interstitial lung disease. Dr. Pyeritz spent 44 years as a clinician and researcher, profoundly shifting how doctors identify and treat inherited cardiovascular conditions.

His work became synonymous with the management of Marfan syndrome. Between 1978 and 2022, his clinical contributions helped extend the life expectancy of patients with this disorder by roughly 30 years. Bert Medina, board chair of the Marfan Foundation, credited Dr. Pyeritz with leaving an immeasurable impact on the patient community. His influence reached beyond the exam room as he worked to build organizations that would provide long-term advocacy for those with rare genetic conditions.

Foundational Research and Institutional Impact

Dr. Pyeritz joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001. During his two decades there, he led research on hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia and studied the societal implications of genetic testing. He was not just a researcher but also an active participant in university governance, serving as the chair of the faculty senate. His colleagues often cited his ability to combine rigorous academic scholarship with a patient-centered approach to care.

Before his time in Philadelphia, Dr. Pyeritz worked for 17 years at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. It was here in 1991 that his team made a breakthrough discovery, identifying that mutations in the FBN1 gene cause Marfan syndrome. This finding led to the development of specific medical regimens that transformed patient outcomes. He also spent nine years in Pittsburgh with the Allegheny Health Network, maintaining a career-long commitment to improving care in the field of medical genetics.

Advocacy and Lasting Legacy

Beyond his clinical research, Dr. Pyeritz was a driving force behind major professional organizations. He cofounded the Marfan Foundation in 1981 to give patients a voice and to encourage other physicians to engage with the condition. A decade later, he helped establish the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. He remained a vocal proponent for patient education throughout his life, writing books such as "The Marfan Syndrome" and "Uncertain Precision: Managing Health Care with Personalized Technologies."

His life outside the hospital was marked by the same intensity he brought to his medical work. A veteran who served 13 years in the Army Reserve Medical Corps, he was also a nationally ranked masters triathlete. He frequently competed in marathons and participated in a world record 100-man, 100-mile relay. He leaves behind his wife, Jane, two daughters, and two granddaughters. A celebration of his life is planned for a future date, while donations in his honor are being directed to the Marfan Foundation.
