The results are in for the Frikkin Laser contest. We received a high volume of impressive entries, ranging from long-term polished projects to quick builds sparked by the challenge. It is clear that the community shares our appreciation for coherent light sources.

After reviewing the submissions, three projects earned the top spots and $150 gift certificates to DigiKey. The first-place winner is Jacob, who developed the CubeRaman. This 3D-printed Raman spectrometer allows home users to identify materials by analyzing light reflection and shifting wavelengths, effectively bringing professional-grade science hardware to a hobbyist level.

Next, Kyle Mayer took a prize for Measuring Microns with Lasers. This custom-built rangefinder achieves precision down to 0.25 μm at a high sampling rate, performance usually reserved for expensive industrial equipment. It is a striking example of what is possible with careful optical design and sensor integration.

Finally, AJRussell’s Glow Engine caught our attention for its artistic execution. By scanning a blue laser over high-quality phosphorescent material, the project functions similarly to a slow-motion CRT screen. The inclusion of open-source motor drivers and recycled hard drive platters as mirrors highlights the technical depth behind this visual display.

We also want to recognize the honorable mentions that stood out in categories like Lightshow and DIY. These entries, such as the Laser Oscilloscope 360 and the versatile pulsed-laser processing machine built from scratch, prove that there is no shortage of creativity in the field of laser experimentation.
