Astronomers capture image of possible companion to famous star Betelgeuse
Astronomers have captured new images providing the strongest evidence yet for a theory that has circulated among scientists for a century: that the famous star Betelgeuse is part of a binary system. Researchers used the Very Large Telescope in Chile to study the red supergiant, which sits approximately 650 light-years away from Earth.
For over 1,000 years, observers have noted strange dimming patterns in the star. Scientists long proposed that a second, companion star, dubbed Betelgeuse B, might explain these shifts. While previous studies pointed toward its existence, this new observation offers the clearest direct evidence to date. Current analysis indicates that this companion star holds two to three times the mass of our sun, a figure significantly higher than earlier estimates suggested.
Despite these findings, the team notes that more research is required to confirm the companion's identity and determine its specific impact on the life cycle of Betelgeuse A. The red supergiant previously captured public attention when its sudden brightening sparked widespread speculation about its stability and potential collapse. As astronomers monitor the system, they hope this new data will clarify the future of one of the most visible stars in the night sky.
