Homecoming at NC State
Astronaut Christina Koch returned to the North Carolina State University campus on Monday morning to address students and faculty. This visit occurred months after her successful splashdown from the Artemis II mission. The university held a homecoming event for the astronaut, titled "Around the Moon and Pack Again," to mark her return to the Raleigh campus.
Koch reflected on her educational roots during the event. She noted that her journey, which included 328 days in orbit and nearly 700,000 miles of travel around the Moon, did not start at a launchpad. She traced those milestones back to Stinson Drive, the location of her studies at the university.
Historical Context of the Mission
Artemis II established new records in space exploration. In April, Koch and her three crewmates traveled to a maximum distance of 252,756 miles from Earth. This feat stands as the furthest distance ever reached by a human spaceflight mission flying by the Moon.
During her address, Koch described the lunar view as a place that felt accessible for exploration. She expressed that the lunar surface felt like a destination meant for human discovery. The mission captivated audiences across the country and served as a focal point for current and past students at North Carolina State University.

Students viewed the homecoming as a source of motivation. Celeste Perkins, an alumna, stated that seeing a fellow graduate achieve such feats creates a sense of privilege and provides hope for reaching higher goals. Junior student Andrew Eaton echoed this sentiment, suggesting that seeing Koch on stage makes such career paths feel attainable for current students.
To honor her achievements, the university renamed Engineering Building II to Koch Hall. The astronaut shared her perspective on the honor, noting that a building serving as a central part of student life reflects a process of growth rather than a finished product. The renaming serves as a permanent mark of her contribution to the university and the broader field of space exploration.
