Seven seniors from Kansas State University Salina have turned their capstone project into a reality for museum visitors. They created a virtual reality game titled ISS: Rupture, which is now being used at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson. The simulation puts players on the International Space Station, where they must navigate zero-gravity environments to identify and repair micro air leaks using a sonic detection tool. This project serves as an educational bridge between high-level university research and K-12 STEM outreach.

The development process required students to manage real-world constraints while working with an actual client. They utilized advanced software, including Unreal Engine 5, to build 3D environments that mirror the complexity of space station maintenance. Beyond the technical coding and design, the team gained experience in professional communication by aligning their output with the specific requirements provided by the museum staff. This collaboration allowed the university to deliver a polished product while providing the institution with new, interactive content for their summer camps.

Testing the game proved to be an essential phase of development. The team recruited children from the K-State Salina community to serve as testers. These sessions highlighted issues with the initial interface, particularly regarding the physical handling of virtual objects. Because children often lacked the muscle memory required for complex VR controllers, the students simplified the interaction mechanics. This feedback loop ensured the final game remained accessible to young museum patrons while still presenting a realistic scenario.

This project highlights the transition from academic theory to industry-level application. Students balanced tasks across different technical disciplines, including cyber systems design and immersive media, to create the final experience. The partnership is designed for longevity, as future classes will have the opportunity to update the game based on ongoing feedback from Cosmosphere staff. By merging software expertise with public education, these students are gaining the practical experience necessary to navigate professional technology careers.
