NASA has officially confirmed the location of the impact crater created when a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket upper stage struck the moon on August 5. The defunct booster, weighing roughly 10,800 pounds, hit the lunar surface at an estimated 5,400 mph. This event represents one of the few instances of an uncontrolled human-made object colliding with the lunar terrain.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter captured images of the site between August 11 and August 12. These photos show a crater measuring approximately 60 feet across. Preliminary analysis suggests the impact site is less than 10 feet deep, with light and dark rays of excavated lunar dust stretching outward from the center.

Tracking the impact required precise coordination. Because the orbiter circles the moon from pole to pole every two hours while the moon rotates, engineers had to tilt the spacecraft cameras during a pass at 60 miles above the surface to pinpoint the specific coordinates. The crater is situated at an elevation of roughly 1,700 feet along the western edge of the moon’s sunlit side.

The crash has sparked broader discussions regarding space sustainability and the management of hardware left in orbit. As lunar missions increase in frequency, agencies are navigating the challenges posed by space debris. SpaceX stated that it works to manage hardware responsibly but noted that solar activity and complex gravitational forces can lead to unpredictable outcomes for objects in certain orbits.

While this is only the second known case of an unintentional rocket impact on the moon, the scientific community continues to monitor these events to understand their long-term effects on lunar geology. South Korea's lunar orbiter also documented the site shortly after the collision, providing additional data for researchers analyzing the debris field.
