Relativity Space to expand Terran R production in Florida

Relativity Space is expanding its manufacturing footprint for the Terran R rocket. The company signed an agreement with Space Florida to establish new production and testing facilities on the Space Coast. This project includes support from the Florida Department of Transportation, which will provide up to 134 million dollars in financing through the Spaceport Improvement Program.

This expansion represents a significant shift for the company, which currently builds its vehicles in Long Beach, California. By moving production closer to its launch sites at Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center, Relativity aims to streamline logistics. Transporting large rocket stages from the West Coast to Florida has historically required complex sea transport, including routes through the Panama Canal. A local factory removes these geographical bottlenecks.

The initiative is expected to create thousands of jobs in Florida by 2034. State officials view this deal as a way to maintain the region's position as a primary center for commercial aerospace activity. With launch congestion increasing at Cape Canaveral, infrastructure investment is becoming a priority for both state and federal agencies.

NASA and Space Florida are coordinating to ensure that infrastructure such as wastewater, roads, and fuel supply can handle the increased launch frequency. Legislative efforts, including the Space Ready 2.0 Act, seek to allow private industry to contribute directly to site upgrades. These measures reflect the growing pressure to modernize launch pads for a higher volume of missions, including those for the Space Force’s national security launch programs.
