SpaceX has confirmed plans to build a new $100 billion launch facility on the coast of Louisiana. The proposed Starbase site covers 125,000 acres, or 195 square miles, near Pecan Island. This represents the third major launch location for the company, providing a new home for the Starship rocket.
Project Scope and Infrastructure
The planned facility is massive in scale. SpaceX intends to construct five launch complexes, each featuring two separate launch pads. Supporting infrastructure will include a dedicated propellant production facility and large-scale power generation systems. The site also includes vehicle processing hangars and residential housing for the workforce.
Elon Musk describes the project as a move to make space travel as routine as air travel. The company aims to transition away from the constraints of its existing sites by establishing this new base. The geographic position is deliberate, as it allows for southward launches directly toward polar regions.
Strategic Importance and Starmind
Polar orbit access is a primary objective for this facility. SpaceX needs to place its Starmind data center satellites into specific orbits to maintain global coverage. These satellites act as orbiting computers, and the Louisiana site provides the necessary launch vector to reach those coordinates efficiently. Proximity to local natural gas supplies also lowers the cost of methane-based fuel production required for the Starship program.
This capital-intensive project follows a major public offering for SpaceX. The company is simultaneously developing a massive chip foundry in Texas known as Terafab. The processors from that facility will power the AI systems integrated into the orbiting Starmind hardware. This vertical integration aligns with the broader goals outlined by company leadership.
Environmental Agreements and Timeline
The land for the project was previously owned by Exxon Mobil. The state of Louisiana acquired the site following a legal settlement concerning coastal erosion. SpaceX committed to specific ecological work as part of the land agreement. This includes marshland restoration, wildlife protection, and the construction of storm defense systems.
Site development is scheduled to begin in 2027. SpaceX expects the first launch to occur in 2029. Given the size of the operation, the timeline requires immediate progress on land preparation and permit approvals.
