SpaceX reschedules Starship launch for Thursday after first attempt was aborted
SpaceX has rescheduled the 13th test flight of its Starship rocket for Thursday following an aborted launch attempt last week. The mission, originating from the company’s Starbase facility in South Texas, was halted during the final seconds of the countdown due to engine issues. Automatic safety protocols triggered the shutdown after sensors detected that a portion of the 33 Raptor engines on the Super Heavy Booster failed to initiate properly during the ignition sequence.
Elon Musk confirmed the technical setback on social media, noting that the team is currently removing at least two of the Raptor engines to conduct inspections and replacements. This ensures the vehicle is ready for a controlled flight. The upcoming mission holds significance as it includes the first operational payload of Starlink satellites, which are intended to test high-capacity laser connectivity before deployment.
This delay arrives as SpaceX faces increased scrutiny regarding its recent operational performance. A Falcon 9 rocket also experienced an engine shutdown event earlier this week during a separate mission in California. While the two rockets rely on different engine architectures, the consecutive nature of these mechanical issues has impacted market confidence in the company. SpaceX shares have experienced a downward trend since the company's recent initial public offering, closing at a new low on Monday.
Despite these technical challenges, the Federal Aviation Administration has granted clearance for the flight after reviewing the company’s investigation into previous mishaps. The 90-minute window for the Thursday launch opens at 5:45 p.m. CDT. SpaceX plans to conduct a full test of the hardware, with the booster targeting a landing in the Gulf of Mexico and the upper-stage Starship performing a flight around the globe to splash down in the Indian Ocean.
