A discarded SpaceX rocket stage is set to impact the moon this Wednesday after drifting through space for more than a year. The upper stage, which launched two private lunar landers in January 2025, will strike near the Einstein Crater at a speed of 5,400 mph. Scientists expect the crash to pack the force of three tons of TNT, creating a crater roughly 90 feet across and 16 feet deep.
While this event provides a rare opportunity for professional and amateur astronomers to study lunar dust plumes, it highlights the growing volume of debris near the moon. Experts emphasize that the rocket stage could have been steered into a solar orbit, preventing this unintended collision.
