SpaceX Expands Data Center Footprint with Massive Compute Deal
SpaceX has secured a new compute capacity contract valued at $13.3 billion annually. This agreement marks the fourth major AI infrastructure deal for the company in 2026. CFO Bret Johnson disclosed the figure during the Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference on September 11, 2026. The new contract brings the total annual revenue from compute leases for the company to $41.1 billion. Revenue from this specific deal is scheduled to begin in December 2026.
While the identity of the client remains undisclosed, Johnson confirmed the arrangement functions as a hosting agreement for an AI customer. SpaceX currently maintains existing multi-billion dollar capacity deals with companies including Anthropic, Google Cloud, and the startup Reflection AI. These partners pay monthly fees for access to the hardware located within the company's data centers. The shift toward leasing out compute power represents a departure from the original strategy, which prioritized running the internal xAI Grok model exclusively.
Rapid Scaling of Infrastructure and Power Capacity
The company is aggressively increasing its physical footprint to support these hardware obligations. As of June 30, 2026, SpaceX managed approximately 1.4 gigawatts of data center capacity. Management targets reaching 2 gigawatts by the end of this year. Their long-term projection aims to hit 10 gigawatts of capacity by the close of 2027. This growth involves significant construction in several states, including new facilities currently under development in Southaven, Mississippi, and Memphis, Tennessee.
Development in Memphis has faced operational hurdles, including issues regarding the installation of gas turbines. The company has moved to remove those units as it continues the expansion of its Colossus 1 and 2 facilities. These efforts align with the company’s broader objective of positioning itself as a primary provider of infrastructure for the AI sector. The scale of this build-out requires massive amounts of electrical power, positioning the company as one of the largest private buyers of data center energy in the United States.
Market Positioning and Industry Significance
SpaceX transitioned to a public company in June 2026. The initial market response drove the company's valuation toward $3 trillion, briefly surpassing the market capitalization of major technology corporations like Microsoft and Amazon. While the valuation has since stabilized near $2 trillion, the company continues to play a central role in the hardware race. The ability to lock in these high-value, long-term compute contracts demonstrates that the company is effectively monetizing the heavy capital expenditure required for AI development.
Still, the broader industry faces questions regarding the long-term sustainability of this demand. The push for 10 gigawatts of power creates significant strain on local electrical grids and demands innovative cooling solutions. Industry observers remain focused on whether these massive infrastructure projects will pay off as the AI market matures.
