SpaceX is moving beyond partnerships with traditional wireless carriers. During a recent earnings call, leadership announced plans for Starlink Mobile to compete directly against AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. The company intends to build a terrestrial network using small, distributed base stations rather than large cell towers. These units will function similarly to current Starlink hardware installed at homes and businesses.

Company president Gwynne Shotwell stated that SpaceX will provide a service capable of eliminating dead zones and performing better during natural disasters. The strategy involves using 65 MHz of spectrum acquired from EchoStar. This terrestrial expansion aims to offer high-bandwidth connectivity directly to mobile devices. Future satellites will support this plan with launches expected to start next year.

While industry analysts remain skeptical about how SpaceX will replicate a national network with limited spectrum, the company believes its approach will be efficient. The plan avoids the high cost of building massive cellular infrastructure by placing smaller base stations in locations where Starlink dishes already exist. These devices will provide mobile connectivity alongside broadband service.

Major carriers have already seen their stock prices dip following the announcement. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile have historically relied on their own massive infrastructure and partnerships with other satellite firms. SpaceX intends to challenge that status quo by combining orbital capacity with a dense network of terrestrial ground stations. The firm is currently hunting for additional spectrum to support its expansion in dense urban areas.

SpaceX faces significant financial questions regarding its high capital expenditure, especially as it invests in both AI and this new mobile network. However, management insists that the buildout will be cost-effective compared to traditional methods. Competition for the $600 billion annual revenue currently generated by the big three carriers is likely to intensify as Starlink rolls out its new service next year.
