Stoke Space confirmed a $1 billion Series E funding round on September 8, 2026, marking a significant milestone for the Kent, Washington-based aerospace manufacturer. This latest injection of capital brings the company’s total private funding to $2.3 billion, as it moves toward the operational phase of its fully reusable rocket systems. The firm intends to direct these resources toward building out physical infrastructure, including a massive 475-acre expansion at its existing 75-acre test site in Moses Lake, Washington. These facilities will serve as the primary hub for propulsion and vehicle development.
Beyond Washington, Stoke is scaling its footprint at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The company secured management rights for Space Launch Complex-14 in 2023 and is currently constructing a specialized payload processing facility at that location. This investment supports the dual-track development of its Nova Pathfinder vehicle and the larger, more powerful Nova Block 2 rocket. CEO Andy Lapsa described the funding as a necessary step to meet the increasing cadence requirements of both commercial and national security customers.
Technical Design and Reusability Targets
Pathfinder represents the company's first orbital launch vehicle and acts as a testbed for the proprietary technologies destined for the Block 2 system. The first stage relies on seven Stoke-designed Zenith engines, which utilize full-flow, staged-combustion cycles fueled by liquid oxygen and liquefied natural gas. The company claims this engine architecture minimizes soot buildup and reduces maintenance demands between flights. A larger iteration, the Nova Block 2, will scale this design by incorporating 14 engines to deliver up to 15 tons into low Earth orbit.
Design choices for the upper stage diverge from industry standards. Instead of conventional ceramic tiles for heat protection, the base of the Nova upper stage features an actively cooled metal dome. Liquid hydrogen fuels the Andromeda propulsion system while simultaneously cooling the structure during atmospheric reentry. This dome is surrounded by 12 small dual-thrust chambers, allowing for precise control and independent system redundancy. The company successfully validated this hopper engine system during a 2023 flight test in Washington.
Industry Context and Future Milestones
Stoke Space targets early 2027 for the maiden launch of the Nova Pathfinder vehicle. Following a successful debut, the company expects to maintain a regular flight cadence throughout 2027 and 2028. Development of the Block 2 configuration occurs in parallel, with a first launch targeted for 2029. This timeline aligns with the broader industry trend of replacing older launch vehicles, such as the SpaceX Falcon 9, which faces a gradual retirement path as heavy-lift systems mature.
As the space sector shifts toward high-volume satellite deployment, the demand for reliable, reusable launch architecture continues to grow. Stoke intends to keep Pathfinder in active service even after the larger Block 2 system becomes operational, citing the specific suitability of the smaller vehicle for certain mission profiles.
