A Potential First for Ohio Wildlife

An armadillo found as roadkill near Oxford, Ohio, represents a significant development for state biologists. While past sightings occurred near major interstates, this specific find appears to be the first documented case of a nine-banded armadillo arriving in the state through natural range expansion. Researchers at Miami University, located just miles from the site, are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

Dr. Tereza Jezkova, an associate professor of biology at the university, identified the specimen as a likely result of natural migration. Previous records from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources involved animals located on exit ramps or near high-traffic thoroughfares. Experts previously categorized these instances as hitchhikers that fell from vehicles traveling from southern states. This new discovery changes the narrative for the state scientific community.

Historical Patterns of Migration

The nine-banded armadillo is the only mammal featuring a hard exterior shell and is native to South America. Over the past century, the species has steadily moved north from its traditional range in the southern United States. According to the National Wildlife Federation, populations now reside in states as far north as Illinois and Nebraska. Kentucky has seen a steady increase in armadillo activity over the last 35 to 40 years.

Records from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources show only two prior verified sightings within the state. Both took place in 2021. The first occurred on May 11 in Richland County, followed by a second instance in Morrow County on June 21. Biologists maintained that these were outliers rather than signs of established residency. The proximity of the Oxford discovery to the southern border of the state suggests a more permanent shift in the regional distribution of the species.

Ecological Impact and Public Health

Armadillos are primarily insectivores, feeding on larvae and adult insects found in soil. Their habit of digging can lead to property damage, as they often create holes up to five inches wide in lawns and gardens. Burrowing underneath driveways or patios creates structural risks, while their presence in pastures may threaten livestock management. Though not naturally aggressive toward humans, wildlife agencies warn against handling the animals due to their potential to transmit leprosy.

Research published by the U.S. Geological Survey in 2025 tracks the spread of the nine-banded armadillo since its initial documentation in Texas in 1849. The species has successfully moved through Missouri into Iowa and across the Southeast, including Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas. As the climate shifts and the species adapts, biologists expect these sightings to become more frequent in the Midwest.
