Tracking Colorado’s Hidden Bat Populations

Roughly 20 species of bats reside in Colorado. Scientists struggle to locate them because they hide in varied spaces. They roost in trees, buildings, bridges, and piles of broken rock known as talus. Megan Mueller, a conservation biologist with Rocky Mountain Wild, describes the search as looking for a needle in a haystack. The animals move seasonally, adding another layer of difficulty to the research. Without concrete location data, protecting these species from threats becomes difficult. White-nose syndrome is the most immediate concern. This fungal disease has caused millions of bat deaths across North America. Tracking population health helps biologists prepare for its spread.

Understanding Maternity Roosts and Population Health

Biologists suspect the Blue Jay Mine is a maternity roost. This is where female bats raise their young. These sites are essential for tracking population trends. During the summer, mothers leave the roost to feed on insects and then return to nurse their pups. At this site, the pups are still learning to fly. They make short trips before retreating inside. These sites remain consistent year after year. Losing one would hurt the local population significantly. Scientists need to establish a baseline for how many bats use these sites to measure changes over time.

Since 2023, about 100 volunteers have documented bats in Boulder County. The interest is high. Slots for volunteer observation often fill in minutes. Some participants travel from as far as Kansas. Beyond the organized counts, the program has received 137 reports from the public regarding roost locations. Anyone can perform a survey by recording sightings during the hour after sunset or before sunrise. This timing captures when the animals are most active in parks, backyards, or open spaces.

High Alpine Discoveries and Disease Monitoring

Wildlife biologists are expanding their search to unexpected terrain. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is now looking for bats on mountain slopes. This focus follows discoveries made by volunteers in the Colorado Pika Project. These observers found bats while searching for pikas among high-altitude rocks. Dan Neubaum, the species conservation program manager for CPW, confirms that the rocky slopes host bat populations. Finding them in these remote areas is a major step in tracking the spread of disease.

White-nose syndrome appeared in Colorado in 2023 at Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site. As of now, seven species have tested positive across 10 counties. The fungus causes white growth on a bat's muzzle and wings. It does not infect humans. However, humans can transport the fungus on gear. Experts advise decontaminating equipment to prevent transmission. The disease is moving slower in Colorado than on the East Coast. This may be because Colorado bats tend to hibernate in smaller groups. As the disease moves into remote locations, public reporting remains a vital tool for wildlife officials.

Monitoring these mammals is about more than just disease control. Bats provide essential pest control by eating thousands of insects every night. Drought and high temperatures also threaten them, as dry conditions reduce the number of available insects. For volunteers like Stacey Showalter, the work is about protecting an often misunderstood species. She watched four bats emerge from a mine recently. While the number was lower than she hoped, the experience reinforced her commitment. She described her motivation as a simple love for the underdog.
