Video appears to show man kick sea lion in San Diego

Federal wildlife officials and San Diego law enforcement are currently investigating an incident involving a man seen in a social media video kicking a sea lion. The incident occurred at Point La Jolla, a location known for its population of California sea lions. Footage shows a man approaching the animal on a ledge at night, attempting to kick it, and pursuing the sea lion as it tries to flee.

The video, which circulated on social media, includes audio of at least one other individual recording and laughing during the encounter. The Sierra Club Seal Society of San Diego has reportedly identified the person who uploaded the video and provided that information to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, known as NOAA, which manages protected marine species.

Under federal law, sea lions are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. This legislation prohibits the harassment, pursuit, capture, or injury of marine mammals. Violations of this act carry serious consequences, including significant fines and the potential for jail time. Officials at NOAA are reviewing the footage as part of their formal investigation into the matter.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria condemned the event, describing it as an unacceptable act of animal cruelty. He has requested that local law enforcement review the available evidence to assist in the federal inquiry. Authorities remind the public that Point La Jolla is a restricted area where visitors are strictly prohibited from approaching wildlife to ensure the safety and health of the animals.
