The Big Bear community and wildlife observers across the country are mourning the loss of Jackie, the bald eagle who captured the hearts of millions. Following a fight with two subadult bald eagles near Big Bear Lake on July 18, the eagle was transported to the Ojai Raptor Center for emergency care. Despite three weeks of intensive medical treatment that involved blood transfusions, advanced imaging, and specialized care from avian experts, she passed away on August 10.
Veterinarians identified several critical health issues during her treatment including severe anemia, blood clots, and organ abnormalities. While her exact cause of illness remains unclear, experts confirmed that her condition reached a point where recovery and a return to the wild were impossible. Following state and federal regulations, a necropsy was performed by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Her remains are now being transferred to the National Eagle Repository to serve indigenous spiritual and religious practices.
Jackie leaves behind a significant legacy that reached far beyond the nest. Her life provided a rare, up-close look at the behaviors of a protected species and informed public knowledge about conservation and animal care. As for the nest, her mate, Shadow, continues to reside in the area. Young eagles Sandy and Luna have already fledged and left the valley. Wildlife experts note that eagles are resilient and expect Shadow may eventually take a new mate. Donations to local groups like Friends of Big Bear Valley or the Ojai Raptor Center remain the most effective way for the public to support ongoing wildlife rehabilitation efforts.
