Rare footage of humpback whale birth captured on drone video: "A remarkable moment"

Wildlife photographer Alexander Forrest captured rare footage of a humpback whale birth off the coast of New South Wales, Australia. The video, recorded via drone, marks the first time this event has been documented from an aerial perspective.

Forrest was tracking whales during their northbound migration when he noticed an adult female moving at an unusually slow speed. Recognizing the potential for a rare encounter, he began filming just as the whale surfaced. The footage shows the water filling with blood before the newborn calf emerges to take its first breath.

Experts from the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia, known as ORRCA, monitored the pair for several hours following the event. This footage is believed to be only the fourth complete humpback birth ever recorded on film. Researchers emphasize that observations of this nature provide critical data regarding marine mammal reproduction and maternal behavior.

Humpback whales were historically threatened by commercial whaling, leading to endangered species protections in the 1970s. While some populations have shown recovery since the 1985 moratorium, several groups remain under protection. Data gathered from this observation will support ongoing scientific efforts to track the health and recovery of these migratory populations.
