Wisconsin is facing a sharp increase in white-tailed deer fatalities linked to epizootic hemorrhagic disease, commonly referred to as EHD. State officials from the Department of Natural Resources report that the outbreak began early this season, with initial cases documented in August. This timing deviates from the typical September onset. Wildlife experts now confirm the virus has spread across four counties in the state.

Washington County is the primary center of the outbreak, with over 800 reported cases as of September 8. Neighboring Waukesha County shows 200 suspected cases, while Ozaukee and Milwaukee counties are reporting lower numbers. These areas share geographical proximity, and the quick spread highlights the challenge of managing wildlife health during warmer months. Erin Larson, a deer herd health specialist with the Wisconsin DNR, emphasized that the current number of cases surpasses trends observed in previous years.

Understanding the Virus and Its Impact

EHD is a viral condition transmitted by biting midges, small flies that thrive in late summer and autumn. The virus typically leads to death within one week of infection. In states where the disease is less common, such as Wisconsin, deer populations lack the antibodies necessary to resist the virus effectively. This leaves high-density herds particularly vulnerable to significant mortality rates compared to regions in the southern United States where the disease occurs more regularly.

The disease does not present a danger to humans or household pets. Public health officials confirm that handling infected deer or consuming venison carries no transmission risk for people. Domestic animals are also unaffected by the virus. Still, the visual impact on the environment remains severe, as infected animals often gravitate toward water sources while suffering from high fevers and dehydration.

Recognizing Clinical Signs and Reporting Procedures

Identifying an infected animal requires looking for specific behavioral and physical changes. Sick deer often lose their inherent fear of humans. They may appear weak despite maintaining a healthy body condition prior to the infection. Other indicators include excessive salivation, foam around the nose—sometimes containing blood—and visible swelling of the head and neck. These symptoms progress rapidly, making early identification difficult for those unfamiliar with the disease.

Historical data suggests this phenomenon is not new to the Great Lakes region. The disease was first identified in 1955 across New Jersey and Michigan. Wisconsin saw its first confirmed cases in 2002. Since then, various outbreaks have struck different parts of the state, with 2019 being one of the most fatal years on record for local deer populations. The DNR remains the primary contact for tracking these events.

Future Implications for Local Herds

While the scale of current losses is significant, state wildlife specialists offer a perspective on population recovery. Deer herds typically recover their numbers relatively quickly after an EHD event. The outbreak generally concludes once the first heavy frost kills the midge population, which halts the transmission cycle of the virus. Consequently, the state does not currently view the outbreak as a permanent threat to the total population.

Citizens are encouraged to report sightings of sick or deceased deer to help the DNR monitor the situation. Reports should include the location, count of animals, and current status. Roadkill does not require reporting for disease tracking, as these animals are often subject to different disposal protocols. The agency maintains a dedicated switchboard for receiving this information from the public as they assess the final impact of the 2026 season.
