Torrey Pines golf tournament will be among PGA’s Championship Series events in 2028
The Sentry at Torrey Pines is officially joining the PGA Tour Championship Series in 2028. This move secures the tournament a spot among the most competitive events on the professional golf schedule, bringing top-tier talent and increased global visibility to San Diego. Sentry Insurance, the PGA Tour, and the Century Club of San Diego confirmed the news in a joint announcement this morning.
While specific scheduling details remain under wraps, the promotion places the event in the same high-stakes tier as major championships and international team competitions. Championship Series events feature 72-hole play with 120-player fields, a 36-hole cut to the top 65, and a minimum purse of $20 million. This prize pool represents a significant increase from previous events hosted at the iconic course.
This transition marks a successful turnaround for the tournament. Only six months ago, the future of professional golf at Torrey Pines appeared uncertain when Farmers Insurance ended its 17-year tenure as the title sponsor. Sentry stepped in to maintain the long-standing tradition of golf at this venue, which celebrates its 60th anniversary of hosting tour events in 2027.
